A Technology Does Not Have to Prove the Metaphysical to Engage It
A designed system can make a question about selfhood, consciousness, meaning, relation, or reality operational without settling what ultimately exists.
A person puts on a virtual-reality headset and sees their body from another position. A camera shows their back from several feet away. When the researcher touches the person’s chest, the person sees the same action applied to the body in front of them.
For a moment, the experienced location of the self shifts.
What has the technology done?
It has altered visual and tactile information. It has changed the conditions under which the person experiences body ownership and self-location. It has produced a reportable effect that can be compared across experimental conditions.
Has it shown that consciousness can leave the body?
No.
Has it proven that the self is nothing more than a construction of the brain?
No.
It has done something narrower and still important. It has brought a question long associated with philosophy, religion, mysticism, and metaphysics into a designed encounter. Part of the question can now be manipulated, observed, measured, disputed, and repeated.
The technology has engaged the metaphysical.
It has not proven it.
Engagement is a relationship, not a verdict
Metaphysical questions concern matters such as consciousness, identity, existence, reality, causation, meaning, selfhood, and the relation between mind and world. Many have no single agreed scientific formulation. Some may resist direct measurement. Others contain parts that can be investigated even while the larger question remains open.
Technology enters when designers turn some part of such a question into an operation.
A system might:
- manipulate the sensory cues that support body ownership;
- create conditions associated with awe or self-transcendence;
- represent participants as interconnected bodies;
- respond to respiration, movement, speech, or neural activity;
- ask people to report changes in self, time, presence, connection, or meaning;
- compare those reports with behavior and physiology;
- test whether a defined design element changes the result.
None of these operations is metaphysically neutral. Each begins with a choice about which feature of the question can be made observable and how it should be represented.
None is metaphysical proof either.
Engagement means the question has influenced the design and the design can affect what happens. Proof would require evidence capable of deciding the specific claim at issue while excluding serious alternatives.
Those are different achievements.
A technology can move the experienced self
In 2007, neuroscientist Henrik Ehrsson reported an experimental method for inducing an out-of-body-like illusion in healthy participants. Participants viewed their own bodies from behind through head-mounted displays while receiving synchronized visual and tactile stimulation. The setup changed where they experienced themselves to be and how they responded when the seen body was threatened. Read the study.
The result matters because self-location can feel immediate and unquestionable. Most people do not experience themselves as calculating the location of the self from several streams of sensory information. They experience themselves as simply being here.
The experiment made that apparent certainty adjustable.
It supports the proposition that multisensory processing contributes to bodily self-consciousness. It gives researchers a method for studying how visual perspective and touch affect self-location and body ownership.
It does not reproduce every spontaneous out-of-body experience. It does not establish that all such experiences share one mechanism. It does not test whether consciousness exists independently of the body. It does not prove a soul left the body, nor does it prove no soul exists.
The same experiment can be misused in opposite directions. A believer may say the induced experience validates extracorporeal consciousness. A reductionist may say it has disposed of every nonmaterial account of the self.
Both claims outrun the design.
The technology did not answer what the self ultimately is. It exposed one way the experience of self-location can be altered.
That is engagement with the question of selfhood under experimental conditions.
Awe can be designed without defining the sacred
Virtual reality also allows researchers to construct environments intended to elicit awe.
In a 2018 exploratory study, Andrea Chirico and colleagues designed three immersive environments using features associated with awe, including tall trees, high mountains, and a view of Earth from space. Thirty-six participants experienced those environments and an emotionally neutral comparison environment. They reported more awe and presence in the awe conditions. Read the study.
The study showed that design choices can change the probability and reported intensity of an experience classified as awe. It did not establish why awe exists, whether the experience discloses truth, or whether anything sacred was present.
Even the word awe contains unresolved structure. Researchers have defined and measured it through features such as perceived vastness, a need to revise existing mental frames, time distortion, diminished self, connectedness, and physical sensations. A 2024 study comparing recalled and virtual-reality-induced awe found overlap in the measured structure while also identifying cultural and linguistic complications. The authors noted that awe has multiple definitions and that parts of the construct remain difficult to operationalize. Read the study.
This is what responsible engagement looks like. A complex experience becomes more accessible to study without being reduced to the procedure used to induce or measure it.
The headset can present vastness.
The questionnaire can record a participant’s response.
Neither can determine whether the experience was sacred.
A scale can record conviction without confirming its object
The distinction becomes harder when the experience contains a sense of revelation.
The revised Mystical Experience Questionnaire, known as the MEQ30, measures reported features such as unity, sacredness, positive mood, transcendence of time and space, ineffability, and a noetic quality: the feeling that something real has been known or disclosed.
Frederick Barrett, Matthew Johnson, and Roland Griffiths validated the scale using pooled data from five controlled psilocybin experiments involving 184 participants. Their analysis supported the MEQ30 as a measure of individual mystical-type experiences and found that its scores predicted participant-attributed changes in attitudes, behavior, and well-being. That is not trivial. A disciplined measure lets researchers compare reports, examine patterns, test associations, and state what participants experienced with more precision than a loose label permits.
But a high score for noetic quality establishes that a participant experienced a sense of knowing. It does not establish that what they felt they knew was true.
A sacredness score measures reported sacredness. It does not detect a sacred property in the room.
A unity score records an experience of unity. It does not prove that all beings are ontologically one.
This distinction does not demean the experience. It protects the experience from being conscripted into a claim the research did not test.
Designed meaning can become part of the effect
In 2022, David Glowacki and colleagues reported results from Isness-D, a distributed multi-person virtual-reality experience. Participants appeared as luminous forms with soft boundaries. The experience used movement, interaction, an energy-matter narrative, and facilitation to encourage a sense of merging and connection.
Fifty-eight participants completed self-report measures used in research on self-transcendent and psychedelic experiences. The reported intensity on four scales was statistically indistinguishable from results in some previously published psychedelic studies. Read the study.
The finding is provocative. So are its limits.
The study had no control condition. Participants were recruited through a citizen-science network. The researchers developed the experience, facilitated its deployment, and analyzed it. The narrative explicitly represented bodies as energetic and interconnected. The authors acknowledged that they could not determine how much of the result came from the narrative, the group setting, the visual design, facilitation, participant selection, or other components.
Those limitations do not erase what participants reported. They identify what the study did not establish.
The system engaged questions about ego, relation, embodiment, and connection. It gave participants an experience designed through one interpretive frame. It produced evidence that the complete configuration was associated with strong reports under the study’s conditions.
It did not show that human beings are literally luminous essences. It did not establish an energetic bond outside known sensory, psychological, and social mechanisms. It did not isolate the active ingredient.
The narrative may have helped produce the effect later measured by the questionnaire. That makes the narrative part of the system, not evidence that the narrative is true.
Operational does not mean fully defined
Science needs operations. Researchers must specify what they did, what they observed, and how they connected an abstract concept to a procedure.
The danger begins when the operation is mistaken for the whole concept.
A long-running debate over operationalism makes this boundary clear. Measurement procedures give investigators access to particular aspects of a concept. They do not necessarily exhaust its meaning. Construct validity exists because a measure must be tested against a broader account of what it claims to measure. A repeatable procedure can produce stable numbers while still measuring the wrong thing or only one part of it. Review the analysis.
This matters when the concepts include consciousness, connection, transcendence, alignment, coherence, presence, or meaning.
If a system defines connection as synchronized breathing, it can detect synchronized breathing. It has not shown that synchronized breathing is the whole of connection.
If a questionnaire defines transcendence through a set of responses, it can compare those responses. It has not captured every meaning of transcendence.
If an immersive environment produces self-reports associated with mystical experience, it has elicited those reports under those conditions. It has not verified the metaphysical content participants may assign to them.
Operationalization makes inquiry possible.
It does not make interpretation disappear.
Proof must match the proposition
The word proof often conceals a stack of different claims.
Consider a responsive environment designed to support an experience of connection. After a session, participants report greater connectedness and sensors show slower, more synchronized respiration.
The evidence may support several propositions:
- The environment operated as designed.
- Respiration changed during the session.
- Participants reported greater connection afterward.
- Defined features of the design contributed to those changes.
Each proposition requires its own method. The fourth may require controls, randomization, component testing, replication, and comparison with credible alternatives.
The same evidence does not establish:
- Participants entered a shared field.
- The field caused the physiological change.
- The experience revealed the nature of consciousness.
- The interpretation applies across people, settings, and cultures.
Those are new propositions. They require new evidence.
A system does not acquire authority to answer them because it has sensors, an algorithm, a patent, an impressive interface, or statistically significant results at another level of the claim stack.
Technical success can establish that a system works.
It cannot decide what its success means without further inquiry.
The category begins at this boundary
Metaphysical Technology is the emerging category for designed technologies, environments, methods, and frameworks that deliberately engage questions, experiences, or relationships traditionally treated as metaphysical and bring them into operational, observable, testable, or governed form.
The definition does not say that metaphysical claims have been scientifically established. It identifies a relationship between a designed system and a class of questions.
That relationship is enough to justify investigation.
It is not enough to justify belief.
This protects the category from two failures.
The first is dismissal. If a technology cannot prove a metaphysical proposition, critics may conclude that it has nothing serious to study. That ignores observable changes in perception, experience, behavior, interpretation, and relationship.
The second is inflation. If a technology reliably produces an unusual experience, advocates may present the experience as verification of the metaphysical story surrounding it. That converts an effect into an ontology without doing the required work.
Metaphysical Technology needs neither move.
It can ask what a system was designed to engage, what operations it uses, what participants report, what signals change, which mechanisms are supported, which interpretations are embedded, and which claims remain open.
The threshold is discipline
A responsible Metaphysical Technology investigation should state:
- the metaphysical question or relationship being engaged;
- the operational feature brought into design;
- the experience, behavior, or signal observed;
- the instrument or measure used;
- the comparison condition and plausible alternatives;
- the interpretation supplied by designers and participants;
- the mechanism supported by evidence;
- the metaphysical proposition that remains unestablished;
- the evidence that could weaken the preferred account.
This standard does not sterilize the work. It makes the work credible.
A person can undergo an experience of profound unity. A system can have helped create the conditions. The report can be sincere. The physiological change can be measured. The experience can alter a life.
None of those facts requires the newsroom to declare what reality ultimately is.
The event deserves investigation before it receives explanation.
The explanation deserves testing before it receives authority.
A technology does not have to prove the metaphysical to engage it.
It has to make the engagement visible, the claims separable, the methods testable, and the uncertainty impossible to hide.
