Metaphysical Technology: Boundary Map

A working comparison map distinguishing Metaphysical Technology from adjacent fields without overstating settled boundaries.

Metaphysical Technology: Boundary Map

Status: Public working comparison map
Controlling doctrine: Canonical category reference Last reviewed: July 23, 2026

This document compares fields and labels that may overlap with Metaphysical Technology. It does not redefine those fields, claim that every external use is consistent, or classify a subject by association.

The decisive question is not what technologies a subject uses. It is whether the subject passes the three-part Metaphysical Technology classification test.

Adjacent field or label Potential overlap Defining difference for this repository Boundary question
Metaphysics Questions about being, causation, identity, mind, reality, and related matters Metaphysical Technology concerns intentionally designed systems that give a metaphysical engagement operational, observable, testable, or governed form Does the design materially enact the question, or does it only discuss it?
Spiritual technology Practices, tools, or systems described through spiritual aims or traditions Spiritual language or purpose does not establish category membership. The three classification conditions still apply Is the metaphysical engagement structural, or only branding and interpretation?
Consciousness technology Systems intended to measure, influence, model, or discuss consciousness Consciousness-related function is neither required nor sufficient. Metaphysical Technology can concern identity, meaning, relation, transcendence, or reality without a consciousness mechanism claim Which claim concerns a measurable function, and which concerns the nature of consciousness?
Neurotechnology Measurement, interpretation, or influence involving the nervous system Neural access is neither required nor sufficient. A neurotechnology qualifies only when its design materially engages the defining metaphysical territory Is the metaphysical question part of the system or attached after the fact?
Biofeedback Feedback about bodily functions used for awareness or regulation Physiological feedback alone does not cross the boundary. The design must materially engage a metaphysical question, experience, or relationship What is measured, what is inferred, and what meaning is assigned?
Immersive technology Virtual, augmented, spatial, or multisensory designed experience Immersion is a medium. Category membership depends on the question and design, not the medium Does immersion operationalize the defining engagement or only deliver content?
Wellness technology Systems directed toward calm, fitness, sleep, stress, focus, or other wellness outcomes A wellness outcome does not make a subject metaphysical. A Metaphysical Technology system also gains no health legitimacy from classification Is the central claim about a wellness outcome, a metaphysical engagement, or both?
Contemplative practice Structured attention, reflection, meditation, or related practice Practice alone does not qualify. Deliberate design must give the metaphysical engagement operational, observable, testable, or governed form What changes when the practice becomes a system?
Religious practice Tradition-based ritual, belief, ethics, community, and meaning Instrumenting a religious practice does not grant authority over the tradition or establish category membership Is technology serving a tradition, studying an effect, or making a new metaphysical claim?
Psychedelic technology Tools, protocols, environments, or systems connected to psychedelic experience Substance use or altered experience does not qualify by itself. The classification test and separate medical, legal, ethical, and research standards remain What part of the engagement is designed, and under which authority is it governed?
Human-computer interaction Study and design of interaction between people and computational systems HCI can supply methods for interface, experience, usability, and evaluation. Metaphysical Technology identifies a narrower object defined by the metaphysical engagement Is the work about interaction in general or a designed encounter with the defining question?
Interactive art Art that changes through audience, environmental, or computational input Artistic interactivity and profound experience are insufficient alone. The defining engagement must materially shape the design Is the metaphysical relationship declared, structurally enacted, and open to examination?

Shared membership is possible

The boundaries are not exclusive boxes. A single subject may be neurotechnology, biofeedback, immersive media, HCI research, and Metaphysical Technology at the same time.

Multiple labels do not reduce the evidence burden. Each label answers a different classification question and may carry different professional, scientific, legal, or ethical standards.

Labels that require caution

The following phrases have no authorized equivalence to Metaphysical Technology in this repository:

  • spiritual technology;
  • consciousness technology;
  • sacred technology;
  • transformational technology;
  • energy technology;
  • quantum consciousness technology.

Their public use varies. They may describe a belief, aspiration, market position, practice, mechanism claim, or category. Use does not establish shared meaning.

Boundary failure tests

A classification should be rejected or returned for more evidence when:

  • the metaphysical relationship appears only in marketing;
  • an ordinary measurement is relabeled as a metaphysical finding;
  • participant meaning is represented as instrument detection;
  • a medium or component is treated as sufficient for membership;
  • a health, scientific, or safety claim borrows legitimacy from the category name;
  • an external field is misrepresented to manufacture distinction;
  • an organization, person, product, or publication is treated as identical to the category.

Current limits

These comparisons are working category guidance, not settled universal definitions of adjacent fields. External definitions, institutions, and disputed usages must be inspected when a specific classification or publication depends on them.
