Can an Experience Be Engineered Before It Is Explained?

Technology can shape the conditions for awe, presence, altered perception, connection, and meaning. That does not mean it has established what those experiences are.

The answer is yes, with a limit that matters.

An experience can be engineered in the practical sense that designers can arrange conditions that make certain experiences more likely. They can control scale, sound, light, movement, timing, social interaction, sensory immersion, narrative, feedback, and expectation. They can then ask what people report, what their bodies do, whether the result recurs, and which design changes alter it.

What they cannot do from that result alone is determine what the experience ultimately means, what kind of reality it discloses, or whether the explanation a participant gives it is true.

That distinction creates a problem for the language we already have. Private belief can interpret an experience but does not make it publicly testable. Science can study reported experience, behavior, physiology, and conditions, but it does not settle every philosophical or metaphysical interpretation attached to them. Design can produce the encounter before either side has explained it.

The unexplained experience is no longer outside technology. It is inside the system.

The design comes first

Consider awe.

Awe once seemed difficult to bring into a laboratory because it is associated with events that exceed ordinary scale: mountains, storms, sacred architecture, birth, death, space, collective ritual, or a sudden confrontation with something larger than the self.

Virtual reality changed the practical problem. A designer does not need to reproduce a mountain or launch a participant into orbit. The designer can construct scale, perspective, movement, sound, and immersion, then compare the result with a neutral environment.

In a 2018 experiment involving 36 university students, researchers built three interactive virtual environments intended to elicit awe and compared them with a neutral environment. The study found that the virtual settings could be used as standardized stimuli for manipulating reported awe. Its small, narrow sample and single-item awe measure limit how far the result can be generalized. The researchers were not proving the nature of awe. They were demonstrating that selected conditions could elicit and study it. Read the study.

Later work sharpened the point. A 2024 study compared awe elicited through autobiographical recall with awe elicited through virtual reality. The researchers found overlap in the measured structure of the experience, but also reported cultural and individual differences. A designed stimulus could produce a recognizable pattern without producing a uniform human response. Read the study.

This is what engineering experience can mean without exaggeration: not manufacturing a guaranteed inner state, but designing a repeatable encounter, changing variables, and increasing the probability of a class of reported experience.

The person is not raw material. The experience is not a button.

Presence can be built. So can connection.

The same distinction appears in research on presence and social connection.

Virtual environments can be designed so that people respond to simulated places and events as if they are present within them. Multi-person systems add another layer. Bodies may be represented abstractly. Movement can be synchronized. Participants can interact through light, sound, spatial proximity, and gesture rather than familiar social cues.

In a 2022 study of a distributed group virtual-reality experience called Isness-D, 58 participants completed self-report measures used in research on ego dissolution, communitas, connectedness, and mystical-type experience. Their scores were statistically comparable on those measures to scores reported in selected psychedelic studies. Participants described weakened self-boundaries and increased connection to others. The study had no control condition, did not compare virtual reality and psychedelics head to head, and could not isolate which parts of the experience produced the reports. The result is significant, but narrower than its most dramatic interpretation.

It shows that a designed, social virtual environment can elicit reports with features resembling those captured by established self-report scales. It does not establish that virtual reality and psychedelics produce the same underlying state. It does not prove that participants became metaphysically connected. It does not show that a questionnaire can decide whether a reported sense of unity was neurological, psychological, social, spiritual, metaphysical, or some combination.

The system shaped an experience. The measurement described aspects of it. Neither operation exhausted the question of what happened.

Meaning is part of the apparatus

Technology never meets a person as hardware alone.

A participant enters with expectation, memory, culture, language, fear, desire, and prior belief. The setting supplies its own cues: the name of the experience, the authority of the facilitator, the behavior of other participants, the visual grammar, the music, the instructions, and what the participant has been told might occur.

Research on placebo and nocebo effects shows why this cannot be dismissed as background noise. Expectations can be shaped through verbal information, conditioning, observation, and social interaction, with measurable effects on reported experience and, in some contexts, physiological processes. The size and mechanism of those effects vary by condition and individual. A 2022 review describes both their reach and the limits of translating them across settings.

Music offers a smaller but revealing example. In a randomized study nested within an open-label psilocybin trial, ten participants heard different musical programs during separate sessions. Mystical-experience scores tended to differ by musical condition, but the difference did not reach statistical significance in the small sample. The finding did not establish that one genre causes a mystical experience. It showed that a component often treated as atmosphere was important enough to isolate and test. Read the study.

Sound, framing, ritual, interface, and expectation are not decorations placed around an otherwise pure experience. They can participate in producing it.

That fact creates an ethical burden. If designers can shape the interpretive conditions of an experience, they can also influence what participants believe happened. A system described as a relaxation environment, a consciousness interface, a sacred technology, or a portal does not present the same invitation. The label arrives before the evidence. It can steer attention, expectation, memory, and explanation.

Engineering an experience without governing its interpretation leaves the most consequential part of the system unexamined.

Measurement does not settle meaning

Sensors can add precision. They can record movement, respiration, heart-rate variability, skin conductance, gaze, speech, neural activity, or patterns of interaction. Those measurements may help researchers establish that something changed, when it changed, and whether the change tracked a feature of the environment.

They do not contain their own interpretation.

A change in breathing can accompany fear, concentration, exertion, calm, anticipation, or awe. Synchrony between people can be measured without proving why it occurred or what it meant to them. Neural activity can correlate with a report of unity without determining whether the experience was only neural, expressed through neural processes, or interpreted through a metaphysical framework.

The instrument answers the question it was built to answer. Trouble begins when the answer is promoted into a different kind of claim.

There are at least four distinct questions:

  1. Did participants report an experience?
  2. Did observable or measured changes occur under identified conditions?
  3. Which parts of the design contributed to those changes?
  4. What was the experience, and what does it establish about mind, self, relationship, or reality?

The first three can be investigated through increasingly rigorous observation and experiment. The fourth may include scientific questions, but it can also involve philosophical, cultural, theological, and metaphysical claims that the same experiment does not resolve.

Collapsing these questions produces two equal errors. One treats an engineered experience as proof of the participant’s preferred metaphysical explanation. The other treats a measurable mechanism as proof that every dimension of the experience has been explained away.

Both move beyond the evidence.

The missing domain

Public language tends to force a premature choice.

Either the experience remains private belief, protected from investigation but unable to support public claims. Or it is translated into an established scientific or technical category, often before the full object of inquiry has been defined. What disappears between them is the designed system itself: the technology, environment, method, or framework that deliberately engages a metaphysical question and makes some part of it operational, observable, testable, or governable.

That is the domain Metaphysical Technology is being proposed to name.

Metaphysical Technology is an emerging category of designed technologies, environments, methods, and frameworks that deliberately engage questions, experiences, or relationships traditionally treated as metaphysical and bring them into operational, observable, testable, or governed form.

The definition does not declare metaphysical explanations scientifically established. It defines an object of inquiry.

That object is already visible whenever a system is built to engage awe, presence, altered perception, self-transcendence, felt connection, meaning, or the boundaries of self and reality. Classification cannot rest on atmosphere, branding, or a spiritual claim attached to ordinary technology. The engagement must be intentional and expressed in a form that can be examined or governed.

This category is needed because the work has consequences before its deepest claims are settled.

Design choices affect participants. Measurements affect interpretation. Labels create expectations. Facilitators hold authority. Data practices create privacy risks. Claims can confer meaning, induce dependence, or exceed what a system has shown. None of these consequences waits for science or philosophy to deliver a final account of consciousness.

What can be said now

An experience can be engineered before it is explained.

The evidence supports the bounded version of that statement: designed conditions can elicit, shape, and help investigate reported experiences such as awe, presence, altered self-perception, and connection. Outcomes vary across people and cultures. Self-report measures, behavioral observations, and physiological signals can establish aspects of occurrence under defined conditions. They do not, by themselves, establish an experience’s ultimate nature or metaphysical meaning.

The right response is neither belief nor dismissal.

It is governance joined to inquiry.

Build the system. Document the conditions. Measure what can be measured. Record what people report. Test alternatives. Separate effect from explanation. Disclose uncertainty. Protect consent. Refuse to let the experience prove more than the evidence can carry.

The experience may arrive first.

Explanation still has to earn its authority.
